Thailand part 1

Let’s start with the weed.

Sherbz by Amber Farms

Farm 1

Amber Farms

My second day in BKK I toured an indoor facility from a legal brand called Amber Farms.

I was invited out by a few of the guys who helped Amber launch about 1.5 years ago.

They go by the name Growzo.

The facility was very clean, organized, and had high tech features. Like a lot of indoor facilities I’ve heard of in Thailand, Athena has seemed to take a large market share.

Some of the more noticeable differences compared to what I’m accustom to seeing at indoor facilities in the states were, the height of the vegetative plants and how de-leafed they were. Could just be the timing of my visit though.

The facility had 3-4 rooms, and they had just been flipped. Unfortunately there was nothing in flower during my first visit.

We smoked after the tour, and the guys busted out some rosin that was ready to be whipped.

What a welcome to Thailand!

Cured hash rosin

I was a little hesitant about the indoor Athena grown herb because with my experience it all smells and tastes the same.

I was wrong in this instance. The flower was loud, flavorful, very potent, burned well, and had a nice effect.

We rolled a fatty of Apples and Bananas by Chris (Compound)—I’d actually never tried this one before given all its popularity in the states.

I was blown away! Literally, haha, I got smacked from the joint.

Maybe it’s just the time in my life, and I sound like a boomer saying this - but weed can be too strong!

…or maybe I just have too many things going on to where I can’t be blitz out of my mind anymore.

Either way, there’s a time and place for every type of high.

I would love to see the expressions of Apples & Bananas grown under sun from seed in the earth.

Growzo Homies

About a month later I went back to shoot the harvest of Sherbz studio style macros.

I didn’t have any of my lighting, focus stacking equipment, or studio tripod. So I borrowed a few led lights from one of the guys and made it work!

Here’s a list of equipment I used:

  • Canon R5

  • Canon RF 100

  • Canon RF 70-200

  • Peak Design Carbon Fiber tripod

  • 3 Borrowed LED constant lights

The Canon R5 has an internal focus bracketing feature which I used to focus stack these images.

I’ve used this feature a few times while out in a forest shooting mushrooms or insects.

It’s fast and pretty straight forward, but lacks any precision. With a little experimentation you get the hang of it quickly.

Take a look at the behind the scenes of the shoot below.

Check out the finished images below!

I’m pretty happy with the results! The differences I notice in the work is the light control.

I wasn’t able to shape the light as I can with c-stands, strobes, and modifiers.

On the flip side, I’m pretty excited to see what I can create with a bare minimum set up.

What a dope experience!

It’s a true blessing for me to be able to travel around the world documenting cannabis as it emerges from decades or longer of prohibition, stigmatization, and persecution.

I’ll be writing and sharing pictures from all of the farms I’ve been visiting in Thailand in the coming blogs.
